T O P I C R E V I E WeurospaceA series of peculiar looking pictorial postmarkers will be used in Germany throughout September, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the so-called Sand man, a popular puppet for children on TV. Invented almost simultaneously in 1959, both East and Western Germany had their own Sand man. The Eastern version was the first, though. And it has a space related story as well: when the 1st German in Space, Sigmund Jähn, launched from Baikonur in 1978, he had a sand man puppet onboard. He staged several sketches with it while onboard space station Salyut 6, but they were never aired. Back to the cancels: here are the ones announced thus far for the "Day of Youth Philately". This year's series of surcharged "Youth stamps" commemorate the sand man.Date: 3.9.09Place: 15320 Neuhardenberg; Serial number: 16/295 Text: "Unser Sandmännchen trifft Kosmonauten /31.
